Project history
In 2018, QMD was contracted by ÉTS to rehabilitate the former Dow Planetarium into offices for its technology entrepreneurship center.
This building, built by the Dow Brewery and donated to the City of Montreal for the 1967 World’s Fair, was designed for a single purpose: the projection and popularization of astronomy and space exploration. In keeping with its original purpose, the entire renovation concept revolved around the circle.

The curved glass was installed in the center and periphery to preserve the existing curves to create shared spaces such as offices.

This glass was also a challenge, as QMD had it imported from New Zealand to achieve the desired height of 15 feet. QMD also built two curved maple staircases to create a central mezzanine with curved glass railings.

Challenges
  • 15-foot-high curved tempered glass inside (imported); curved curtain wall outside.
  • Two curved staircases in maple wood; cabinetry in solid strips of architectural wood.
  • Polished concrete slab throughout, 20,000 square feet; no visible mechanical piping.
  • 9-month schedule
